BEARD BALM OR BEARD OIL
Beard Balm vs Beard Oil
A question that comes around often in our office is, "Do I need Beard Balm or Beard Oil"? When you look in the mirror at that glorious facial appendage, no matter whether it is a 2mm length stubble or an 18 inch hanging mane of manliness, you may notice your beard looks a bit messy, dry, unconditioned, frizzy, or just plain tired and needs.....something.
This is when you need to look at the available products designed to keep your Beard and mustache healthy, conditioned, and manageable. For this you will look no further than beard oil and beard balm products. But to the naked eye, the two products seem very similar on some levels. So should you be using balm or oil, or both?
This is a question we get asked all the time especially as we sell a number of grooming kits that include both balm and oil together. So which one should you use, and why?
The quick answer:- If you are in a rush here is the answer in just a few words
Beard Balm is designed to style and hold your hair in place, whether beard, tache, or even head hai. It is used for conditioning and styling the entire facial hair and is best used for longer hair (11/2-2" plus).
Beard Oil is designed to nourish, condition, and make the perfect growing conditions for your hair. It also helps to lightly style the hair.
The reality is that some people choose to use one or the other, and some people use both of them in combination with each other.
If you have a little more time then here is the longer answer:-
BEARD OIL
What are the benefits of beard oil? - The golden nectar known as Beard oil will contain a number of oils in combination and is supplied in a small bottle (usually with a dropper or pipette to regulate the amount used). Beard oils contain carrier oils that will generally do all the good work. Examples are jojoba, hemp, argan, almond, grapeseed etc. These are sometimes complimented with essential oils for fragrance. Examples of these are sandalwood, cedarwood, pine, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. These oils are designed to be spread on the hairs, down to the roots and on the skin. Good beard oils will nourish and moisturize the facial hair, and relieve skin conditions such as flaky skin, beard itch and other skin ailments. This will give you a supremely nourished, conditioned and healthy hair growth. Our beard oil contains many hair and skin enhancing properties with ingredients such as jojoba oil, hemp oil, and vitamin E which conditions and nourishes the beard and is light.
BEARD BALM
Benefits of beard balm - Beard balm shares some of the same ingredients as beard oil but with the addition of Shea butter and beeswax. These ingredients act as a styling product for your Beard and are generally used in longer beards ( 1-2 inches long). Shorter hairs do not have enough length to manipulate and style. Beard balms are designed to be used sparingly, just a small amount is needed. But beard balm will give you more control and more hold to unruly beard hairs. Our balm contains Beeswax and Shea butter along with jojoba and hemp oils which help to smooth down and hold hairs in place.
Do you use beard oil and balm together?
The answer is yes, and no. In some instances you may just need beard oil, for instance if you have a shorter beard then oil might be for you because you don't need the balm to tame and control those long hairs. Beard oil helps to promote healthy hair and growth and will usually have more of a fragrance then Beard balm. On the flip side it is not as good for styling as it does not have the same hold as balm.
If on the other hand you have a long old beard that has some hair straying and flying away problems, then balm might be for you. It is perfect for styling in manipulating facial hair and it conditioners your beard and tache thanks to the Shea butter and beeswax in balm.
Oil or Balm, the Verdict
So the real answer to that age old question we all ask is.... (cue drum roll) you should use both! Use beard oil everyday to keep your beard nourished and in it's natural state, and occasionally when it needs more help then slap on some beard balm to tame and conditioning. Both products used together will give maximum styling and health.
Another product you may also need is mustache wax. Mustache wax is designed to hold your hair in place, whether beard, tache, or even head hai. It makes strong holds such as points, twirls etc.
